What Rookie is

Rookie ball is the entry level of the minor leagues — the complex leagues attached to a club's spring-training site (the Arizona and Florida Complex Leagues) and the Dominican Summer League. It is where most international signings and later-round draftees start, and the seasons are short.

What it means for a card

This is the level where a name usually appears on cardboard for the first time, so it is where a first-Bowman card is cheapest — and where the least is known. A strong complex-league line is a real signal about a hitter's tools, but it is measured against the youngest, most uneven competition in professional baseball, and a large share of these players never reach a full-season club at all. Treat a price here as paying for a range of outcomes, not for a projection.
